Positive Sayings: Let These Writers Motivate You!

Positive sayings can easily uplift us and help us climb out of the “job search blues.” Over the years, I have saved many thought provoking sayings from both authors and musical artists which I would like to share with you here and in other parts of job-search-coach.com.

The Optimism of Musician Howard Jones

Popular in the mid-80’s, Howard Jones is one of my favourite musicians, in part because he offers us some of the most inspiring lyrics – positive sayings which I am hard-pressed to find in today’s music within any genre.

“Hojo” wrote a song where he speaks indirectly about our need to pursue our goals and not be held back by our own fear, which is sometimes intensified through reflecting upon the misfortunes of others.

In the song “Pearl in the Shell” he writes about a man who is afraid to share his incredible musical talent with others:

Under his nose was a dream come true
Been there all the time and he almost knew
Thoughts of people in misfortune stopped him doing things well
His duty was to use it - left his pearl in the shell
And the fear goes on
And the tear flows on for nothing…

In response, here are some lyrics from Howard's first big hit, “New Song” – can you apply these positive sayings in some way to your job search challenges and struggles?

This is a song to all my friends
They take the challenge to their hearts
Challenging preconceived ideas
Saying goodbye to longstanding fears!

Don't crack up,
Bend your brain,
See both sides,
Throw off your mental chains!

Thomas Troward Explains How We Can Move Forward

19th century “new thought” author Thomas Troward (1847-1916) offers us his own optimistic views on how we naturally progress onwards and upwards in our careers.

One of the most powerful positive sayings I have ever come across, this excerpt is packed full of useful information we can apply to our job search and career development. I suggest that you read it over a few times to be able to really take it all in.

Troward writes,

My mind is a centre of divine operation.

The divine operation is always for expansion and fuller expression and this means the production of something beyond what has gone before, something entirely new, not included in past experience, though proceeding out of it by an orderly sequence of growth.

Therefore, since the Divine cannot change its inherent nature, it must operate in the same manner in me; consequently, in my special world, of which I am the centre, it will move forward to produce new conditions, always in advance of any that have gone before.

Wallace Wattles: The Science of Being Great

As I mention in other parts of job-search-coach.com, new thought author Wallace Wattles also wrote many very helpful positive sayings. Here's an example from his book, “The Science of Being Great:”

Have perfect faith in yourself and in your ability to cope with any combination of circumstances that may arise.

Do not be disturbed if you are alone; if you need friends they will come to you at the right time.

Do not be disturbed if you feel that you are ignorant; the information that you need will be furnished you when it is time for you to have it.

That which is in you impelling you forward is in the things and people you need, impelling them toward you.

If there is a particular man you need to know, he will be introduced to you; if there is a particular book you need to read it will be placed in your hands at the right time.

All the knowledge you need will come to you from both external and internal sources.

Your information and your talents will always be equal to the requirements of the occasion.

From Suffering to Inspiration: Viktor Frankl

Viktor Frankl wrote "Man’s Search For Meaning" after enduring and surviving the anguish of life in a Nazi concentration camp during World War II.

Frankl speaks from personal experience, not theory, when he offers all of us the following inspirational quotes and sayings:

A human being is a finite thing, and his freedom is restricted. It is not freedom from conditions, but it is freedom to take a stand toward the conditions…

The consciousness of one’s own inner value is anchored in higher, more spiritual things, and cannot be shaken… Man does have a choice of action.

Man can preserve a vestige of spiritual freedom, of independence of mind, even in terrible conditions of extreme psychic and physical stress.

Everything can be taken from a man but one thing – the last of the human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way…

And I’d like to finish up this page with a blessing to you: :-)

An Old Blessing:

May the path rise up to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face
And rains fall soft upon your fields
And until we meet again
May you be held in the hollow of God’s hand.
